Flatware Care & FAQs

About Our Flatware

Mikasa's flatware patterns reflect the same style and sophistication found in our other popular categories. A majority of Mikasa patterns are 18/10, which means that 18% chromium and 10% nickel have been added to the basic alloy. The high nickel content gives the steel a warm, soft luster and the chromium adds strength and resistance. Stainless steel is affordable, durable, needs no special care, is dishwasher safe and withstands harsh detergents. Under proper care and use, our flatware has superb resistance to staining from virtually all foods and household substances and will not need to be polished.

Care Instructions

Follow these easy care instructions to ensure that your fine stainless steel flatware lasts for many years.

  • Wash flatware before using for the first time.
  • Avoid soaking stainless steel flatware for a prolonged period or overnight.
  • Before placing in the dishwasher, rinse food from flatware.
  • When loading your dishwasher, make sure knife blades do not come in contact with other utensils. This will prevent blades from nicking or scratching other pieces.
  • Use a mild non-chloride detergent. Never pour detergent directly onto flatware.
  • In hard water areas, use a softening agent to avoid spotting or pitting.
  • Always remove stainless flatware from the dishwasher shortly after the drying cycle is complete. Avoiding this prolonged exposure to a moist and hot environment is best for the care of your flatware.
  • If stubborn stains or rust should occur, use a non-abrasive stainless or metal polish paste or cream. Avoid grainy cleansers.
  • Limit exposure to water that has a high mineral content, high chloride dishwashing detergent and foods that contain chloride (table salt, mustard, mayonnaise and eggs) as pitting and spotting may occur.
  • We recommend washing flatware in the following finishes separately by hand: Gold Accent or Gold Plated, Frosted or Sandblasted
  • PVD finishes (Gold, Copper, Noir, Black Matte) can be washed in a dishwasher but handwashing remains preferable and is advised to maintain a brand-new shine
  • When washing by hand, remember to:
  1.  Use a mild dishwashing detergent.
  2.  Rinse in hot water.
  3.  Immediately dry pieces completely with a soft cloth.
